heART of the City

What is heART of the City?

heART of the City is an annual found-object art show. Works of art created by local emerging and professional artists are featured in its pop-up gallery and fashion show. This event is all about supporting our community—especially its many talented artists and their work. The show is entirely free of charge—there is no cost to submit artwork and no cost to attend! There is something for people of all ages at heART of the City from admiring pieces on display in the gallery or getting walked down the runway at the fashion show, to casting your vote for the People’s Choice Awards, to creating art yourself with hands-on activities, and more!

Thinking about attending heART of the City?

When is heART of the City?
Mark your calendars for Friday, March 19, 2027 from 5:00-7:30PM.
— 5:00-6:30PM You’ll have the opportunity to explore the gallery, enjoy refreshments, and cast your People’s Choice vote.
— 6:30-7:30PM You can find a spot to enjoy the fashion show, which will be followed by the awards ceremony.
Following the awards ceremony you’ll have a little more time to take in any artwork you may have missed before artists depart with their creations.

Where will the art show be hosted?
All artwork in this found-object art show will be on display for one day only as we turn the Whittier Middle School gymnasium into a gallery and fashion show for an evening. There is a parking lot available across from the building on Fairfax avenue and additional street parking is available. To enter, use the north entrance on Fairfax avenue (we will have a sign directing you).

Whittier Middle School (gymnasium)
930 E 6th Street
Sioux Falls, SD 57103-1306

What should I expect while I’m there?
An art show—and a unique one at that! When you enter you will be given a program with information for the evening. You’ll want to come with plenty of time to walk around and explore the many artistic creations on display. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to read a brief description from the artist that aims to connect their artwork to the show’s theme of Love. We will even ask you to cast your vote for the People’s Choice awards.

Around 6:30PM you will be invited to turn your attention to the runway as the fashion kicks into gear. Watch as models showcase wearable found-object artwork in-action, and listen as the artwork is described and highlighted by the fashion show’s emcee. Plus you’ll have an opportunity to vote for your favorite, see these unique creations up-close, and even meet the artists who made them—all during the fashion show.

For the show, we have enlisted reputable artists to offer private feedback to artists and select their choice for Best of Show. You will also benefit from their expertise as they help us appreciate aspects of the submitted artwork that we may not have noticed during the awards ceremony. And a special moment in the evening is watching artists receive awards.

heART of the City is the perfect excuse to get out of the house: Find delight as you immerse yourself in a creative space; Find inspiration as you encounter the unexpected; Find joy as you celebrate and encourage artists from around our community!
